| Memorial | Captain Alonzo L. BINGHAM Captain Alonzo L. Bingham died January 25, 1893, at his home in Saginaw, aged 76 years. Deceased was born in Perry, Genesee County, N.Y. in 1816. When about twenty-three years old he removed to Buffalo, where he taught eleven years and then came to Michigan, locating at Mt. Clemens, where he was engaged in teaching until his removal to Saginaw in 1854. The following year he was chosen principal of the union school on the east side, filling that position until late in 1859. In October, 1862, he was commissioned captain of Company H, 27th Michigan Infantry, which company he was instrumental in raising, and served faithfully and gallantly three years, being mustered out July 26, 1865. He was wounded fours times in action, at Jackson, Miss., July 11, 1863; in the Wilderness, May 6, 1864, Spottsylvania, Mary 12, 1864; and at Petersburg, Va., June 28, 1864. He was elected register of deeds of Saginaw County in 1867 and served two terms. He was principal of Freeland union school in 1889-90. He was married June 29, 1845, at Buffalo, to Louisa M. Folsom, who with two children, Mrs. Laura C. Healey of Lansing, and W. H. Bingham of St. Cloud, Minn., survive him. Captain Bingham was an honored member of Gordon Granger Post, G.A.R. |
