The Unitarian Society

In the summer of 1881, the Rev. R. Conner delivered two lectures in Mount Pleasant.  Reverend R. Savage, also talked in September of that year, followed a month later by an organization of about twenty members.  At first meetings were held in the Opera House, until a church building was completed in December, 1883, at a cost of $3,000. Many ministers and delegates were present at the dedication, when, among other addresses, Miss Ida C. Hulton of Athens, Michigan, read a paper on WOMAN AND HER WORK.  In January, 1882, a society know as the Ladies Union was organized with the purpose of promoting social life and the general good of the community by working in harmony with the church.

The funds are wholly under the control of its membership.  Gentlemen are admitted as honorary members.  Funds raised by this society in the first two years amounted to $600.00.

(Note by M.P.C.: After discontinuing services, this property was given to the city of Mount Pleasant, to be used as a library.  This is the site of the present library.  The old one being the original Unitarian Church.)
