Abandoned Edifice Turned Over To Local Institution For New Building
The Gilmore
Methodist church, which has been abandoned for some time, has been turned over
to the local Indian
school for their use and is now being torn down in preparation to being moved to
a site only about four blocks from the
Indian school.
This building was
given to the Indians by the Farwell-Gilmore church people. It is
constructed of cement blocks which are
being carefully removed so they can be used in the construction of the new
church. There are about ten Indians now working on the building and the
material will be moved to the new site as soon as it is ready.
The new
structure will hold about 350 people and will be built for a community social
center as well as for church meetings.
The basement will have a large stage built in and this is the room to be used
for social functions. There will also be 12 class rooms in the building.
It is expected that the new church will be ready for dedication sometime next June.
The home missionary board of the Methodist church has granted $2,500 to be used in helping to build the church. The fund was increased by $1,000 received from the Indian pageant presented at Epworth. This church, when completed, will fill a long felt want at the Indian school.
